The Blum family started in the cattle business when Minor and Bertha Blum got their first purebred Polled Shorthorn cattle in 1925 from Bertha’s father, H.L. Ryon’s, herd.  Minor raised cattle his whole life and was very active in the shorthorn world, having helped organize the Iowa Polled Shorthorn Association and held several offices throughout the years. 
 

Bob & Donna Blum farmed and raised Polled Shorthorn cattle with Bob’s parents, Minor & Bertha Blum.  They held their own production sales from 1957 until 1975.  Bob was a director on the American Polled Shorthorn Society from 1968 to 1974.  He is the third generation Polled Shorthorn cattle breeder starting with H.L. Ryon, Bob’s grandfather.  Bob showed the Grand Champion Shorthorn bull in 1968 at the Omaha Shorthorn Show.  He showed the Grand Champion Heifer in 1972 and the Grand Champion Bull in 1974 both at the Iowa Royal Show in Des Moines.  He also showed many grand and reserve grand champions at the Northwest Iowa Show & Sale over the years.  They also showed several years at the Iowa State Fair. 

 

Julie is the daughter of Bob & Donna Blum and also is the 4^th generation of purebred Shorthorn cattle breeders.  Julie & her three daughters continued the family tradition of raising, showing and selling cattle, having their first “club calf sale” in 1986 and each subsequent year thereafter.  They were asked to join the Pro Tour when it originated in 2003 and have been a part of the Pro Tour ever since. This year they will celebrate their “25^th Anniversary” of having a club calf sale.  Tess, Hallee & Bailey started showing calves at a very young age and continued throughout their 4-H and adult years.  They traveled all over the United States and showed champions at major shows including the National Western in Denver, Colorado; Maine Anjou National Shows in Kansas & Ohio, the Iowa State Fair, the Iowa Beef Expo and many jackpot shows; as well as the Dickinson and Clay County Fairs. The majority of the cattle herd today consists of Maine Anjou, Chianina, Shorthorn and other breeding heifers that Tess, Hallee & Bailey showed throughout their 4-H years as well as Bob & Donna’s cows & Julie & Doug’s cows also.
